QR and Bar code Scanners Compatibility List

Connecting QR or Barcode Scanners require a serial connection. To learn more refer our separate manual.
We ask our users to report any not listed cases to help others select well

Virtual Serial/Com (highly recommended)

This method uses a regular USB connection. Depending on a model the scanner requires to switch from default USB HID to USB CDC Host or Virtual Serial mode. There is a lot of modern scanners that support this mode - but there is a lot of technical solution on the market. Some will use system drivers, some require additional software to be installed first.

ZEBRA (Formerly Motorola Symbol) 1D/2D scanners

• Zebra DS2208

We have tested: Zebra DS2208 on both Windows 10 and Apple macOS computer

Before connecting to USB socket the user has to go to User Guide and scan following barcodes:

  1. Reset to factory defaults. This step isn't mandatory but recommended - just in case to be sure that the reader is a well-known state.

  2. Switch from USB-HID to Virtual Com (CDC)

No additional software is required. Both systems (Mac and PC) have built-in CDC support.

• HD8900 2.4G WIRELESS w. docking station

Based on information from the vendor, In this scanner engine is the same as hd74
Manual from HD74 has much more options! Requires selecting Virtual Com (scan the barcode from Manual)
Reported in the system as usbmodemSTM32101
The scanner reads barcodes very fast and effective on both Mac and PC.

• HD74 (2.4G wireless and USB-wired)

Tested sample scanner seems has trouble with reading barcodes, but communication established properly

• HD29A (wired)

The Virtual com feature requires a separate driver (Windows version only).

NETUM (not tested, but reported as compatible by manufacturer)

• NT-M5 (2D wired) (USB Seria Port - USB COM Port Emulation)
• NT-1228 (2D wired) (USB Seria Port - USB COM Port Emulation)

Serial Port • RS-232 • COM

That kind of connection should be available for most of the barcode readers on the market but requires collecting all necessary part. To learn more about compatible adapters refer our manual for serial connection on PC and Mac.
Your computer has to be equipped with Seria Port. If not exist a USB to Serial Adapter may be used. Your Scanner requires dedicated Serial Cable and in most cases external Power Supply (5V). It is important to switch from default USB HID ( keyboard emulation mode to RS-232 ( refer you User's Guide to find a proper barcode.

Cable serial port connection we have successfully tested on both Apple / Mojave macOS and PC / Windows 10 computers using 3-rd party DA-70156 Digitus® USB to Serial Adapter

• Symcode MJ-4209

• HD29A

HD29A (  can also work on PC /Win using Virtual Com - we recommend Serial cable with power supply and adapter for Mac user only.

Bluetooth SPP

Bluetooth SPP mode has to be selected first and paired in the second step.
Bluetooth devices will go to sleep mode and CC Capture can lose connection - we do not recommend this connection for the print industry - cable scanners are more practical.

• HD 70
• HD-70 MINI PRO  / CT-30

Both scanners work fine on Apple/macOS Mojave - and doesn't work on PC/Windows10

Incompatible devices

All cheap scanners that offer only USB HID mode (keyboard emulation). Also, some scanners that should work (e.g. theoretically support SPP) but we know DON'T. Some BT radio modules may have problems with a connection  ( various standards), also not all USB/Serial Adapters are compatible ( even if listed by Device Manager)

The list of devices that fails our tests or we judge incompatibility based on documentation:

HD76 (2.4G WIRELESS or BT)  - pairing is possible but the system will report SPP device as an Audio device and is not capable to establish a proper connection.

• Inateck:

Most scanners offer only USB HID interface  No Virtual Com)

• Netum:

NT-R2 (* SPP for Win), NT-M3, NT-1200, NT-1698, NT-2028, RD-2013
