Matching Standards

Matching a printing standard in ChromaChecker’s Print Inspector requires more than just configuring tolerances. Four prerequisites must be satisfied before any standard can be reliably met.

Prerequisites

Before attempting to match a standard, confirm the following four conditions are in place:

Printer Precision Your press must be stable enough to meet the standard. Variation has to be within an acceptable range before calibration or standard-matching makes sense. Perform preventive maintenance and fix any mechanical issues before proceeding.
Instrument Consistency Equipment and measurement methodology must be reliable. Common issues to avoid: print condition mismatch, wrong measurement backing, incorrect M-condition, different color specification, comparing wet to dry measurements.
Material Documentation Maintain detailed records of the consumables, inks, and substrates in use. Changes in any of these can shift the measured output independently of the press.
Standards Knowledge Familiarity with the relevant ISO and industry standards is essential. Understand what the standard requires — not just the ΔE tolerances, but the print conditions, measurement geometry, and substrate requirements it defines.

Print Inspector Architecture

Before configuring standard-matching in Print Inspector, review the Print Inspector architecture documentation to understand how the system uses the following components together:

  • ICC Profiles — define the target color space for the press
  • Tolerance Sets — define acceptable deviation per channel for pass/fail evaluation
  • Color Libraries — reference values for spot colors and process targets
  • Palettes — grouped sets of references for different substrates or customer requirements
If your press is failing the standard despite correct configuration, start by checking precision. A press that varies widely job-to-job cannot reliably pass any standard, regardless of how well it is calibrated on average.

Selecting the Right Standard

ChromaChecker supports matching to all major printing standards. Choose based on your printing process and market:

  • ISO 12647-2 — commercial sheet-fed and web offset (PSO, FOGRA, GRACoL)
  • G7 — gray balance-based calibration method, widely used in North America
  • ISO 12647-6 — flexographic printing
  • ISO 12647-7 — digital proofing (for verifying proof accuracy against press)
  • Custom targets — internal brand standards or customer-defined requirements
