X-Rite eXact2

ChromaChecker compared eXact to eXact2. The new instrument has many key improvements, and we recommend the upgrade.

ChromaChecker Tests

CC Capture supports eXact2 today. We extensively tested the eXact2 instrument, one of which we did using QuickChecker's "Start Variation" feature. Our test started by checking the repeatability of the White calibration reading, and then we repeated a similar test using the black trap. The results of both tests are impressive - the main issues of the previous eXact are fixed perfectly. Also, eXact2 can measure shallow L values. In our test, the "black trap" returned an L* value as low as 0.15, which is a perfect result.

Black Trap

We took 50 measurements with irregular triggering intervals, making the test harder to pass. The final calculations were based on 1225 individual pairs. Comparison to the first generation shows extreme improvement. That addressed the weakest point.

Pross

  • Excellent repeatability for White ceramic tile and black trap (extremely dark objects).
  • Build-in camera improves measurement positioning.
  • Straightforward internal procedure with no confusing selection on data collection method, which has a visible impact on results, no separate calibration data for M1Part2
  • The scan feature is integrated with the instrument. There is no need for extra accessories and no more zebra wheels or similar fragile components.
  • Excellent engineering solutions (e.g., sophisticated annular illuminating ring).
  • Bluetooth connection replaced with Wi-Fi
  • Simple operations, friendly user menu.
  • Clear SDK with simplified procedures
  • And much more...

Cons

  • The plastic enclosure does not seem robust. The operator has to be more careful.
  • The low frame range of the video camera causes preview chokes.
  • The current SDK doesn't allow the use of images from the camera.
  • The current SDK doesn't allow the display of reports on the instrument screen.

Conclusion

X-Rite is making significant progress with new instrument generations. Like the i1Pro family, where each new generation offers a visibly better product, eXact2 addresses most of the issues of the first generation. We recommend an instrument upgrade for all demanding customers.

Notes to  CC Capture integration

The current CC Capture version's Wi-Fi Connection is unstable. We are working on this issue. Please use a USB cable connection instead.
